E. E. Harris

1868

After his election, the newspapers mention very little about Chief Harris.  Not surprisingly, they are primarily focused on the state congressional convention and matters surrounding it.  However, they do cover one interesting incident, in which two former city commissioners argued with another local man.  A fight ensued; one of the participants was taken to the guard house, and, on the way, more fights broke out.  A policeman who was brother to the two former councilman had become involved, and by the end, a crowd had assembled and another policeman, related to the former commissioners as well, shot twice at an uninvolved African-American man.  The policeman was arrested by the sheriff, and Chief Harris paid his bail.  In a possibly related event, Chief Harris soon after got into a fight with an acting commissioner, hitting him with a nightstick.  Soldiers finally broke up the chaos.
