THE HISTORY & LEGACY OF THE
RALEIGH POLICE DEPARTMENT
Officer Charles Paul
Charles Radford Paul III, a Wake County native, graduated from East Wake High School. He went on to earn a degree in Physical Education from East Carolina University. On July 15, 1995, he joined the Raleigh Police Department. He was assigned to the Traffic Enforcement Unit on August 2, 2000, having already obtained a motorcycle license in 1994.

On the morning of September 10, 2002, Master Officer Paul was working radar on the inner loop of the beltline between Rock Quarry Road and Hammond Road. While attempting to catch up to a speeding vehicle, Officer Paul was caught in the draft of a truck and lost control of his motorcycle. He subsequently hit a piece of aluminum ladder and some other debris that had been left in the road and was thrown from his motorcycle, striking the median barrier guardrail. He was survived by his wife, Tiffany, and their one-year-old baby girl, Charli, as well as his parents.
